PT6 deliveries surge buoyed by outstanding dependability and advanced technologies

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND–(Marketwire – May 20, 2008) – Pratt & Whitney Canada this year celebrates 45 years of innovation and dependability since the first PT6 engine came off the production line to power Beech Aircraft Corporation’s King Air 90 turboprop plane, an event that helped change the face of business aviation. Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) is a United Technologies (NYSE:UTX) company.

“The PT6 engine’s outstanding dependability, versatility and dispatch reliability have made it one of the most enduring engines in aviation history,” said Claude Lachapelle, vice president, Business Aviation, P&WC.

New aerodynamic and material technologies have enabled the PT6 engine to gain more power without having to significantly increase in size. Other innovations have reduced emissions and increased maintenance intervals. Since its introduction, the PT6 family has accumulated a total of more than 330 million flight hours.

“The PT6 engine family remains the world’s most popular engine in its class and is one of our greatest success stories,” said Lachapelle. “Experience gained from the PT6 program has helped spawn many of the engine families that have made us a world leader in the gas turbine engine market.”

Meeting in Brasilia last week, the presidents of the 12 countries in South America approved the constitution of the Union of South American countries called UNASUR. The 12 countries which have endorsed the constitution include Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam, Uruguay and Venezuela. President Bachelet stated during the presentation that the Union has to focus on social political goals to reduce poverty throughout the region. Lula of Brazil, who hosted the meeting said: “The constitution of UNASUR must comply with the wishes of the governments in the region that are seeking unity. This is a dream of integration which was held by our predecessors centuries ago.” Congratulations to all of the 12 countries, a really great decision and one which we have been hoping to see for a long time. Just a thought: how about an Open Skies agreement within the region to promote continental tourism and the economy?

Avidyne Answers Questions Regarding Cirrus’ Introduction of Garmin Perspective

May 27, 2008

The announcement of the Garmin “Perspective” avionics package for Cirrus aircraft has prompted several members of the press community to approach Avidyne for its reaction.  In an effort to provide its position on a majority of the commonly asked questions, Avidyne has provided the following responses to said questions.  Please call Tom Harper (tharper@avidyne.com) for further information on these or any other questions you may have regarding your media coverage.

Question: Was Avidyne “kicked off” the Cirrus OEM account?

Answer: No, Cirrus is still a strong OEM partner of Avidyne’s. Cirrus CEO Alan Klapmeier stated during the EBACE press conference announcing the availability of the Garmin Perspective that Avidyne is still considered the “standard” on Cirrus planes.  As have several other airframe manufacturers, Cirrus, too, has broadened its avionics options for its customers.  Avidyne will continue to aggressively promote and market to Cirrus prospects to buy Entegra-equipped Cirrus planes. Among other benefits, the easier-to-use Entegra-equipped Cirrus SR22 is $48,000 less expensive and provides an additional 42lbs of useful load, both critical factors for many potential Cirrus customers.

Question: How will Avidyne interact with existing Cirrus/Entegra customers now that Garmin  is being offered as an option?

Answer: Avidyne remains very dedicated to working with the owners and operators of of all 4000+ Cirrus/Entegra airplanes worldwide and helping them maintain their value.  Consistent with this, Cirrus and Avidyne jointly launched Avidyne’s new MLX product this week at EBACE. Avidyne’s MLX 770 is initially targeted at European based Cirrus aircraft as a turn-key upgrade.  Avidyne is also continuing to aggressively promote R7 upgrades to, and maintains consistent communication with, its worldwide installed base of existing Cirrus/Entegra customers.

Question: What type of financial impact does Garmin’s entry into the Cirrus product line have on Avidyne?

Answer:  Avidyne enjoys a broad and diverse portfolio of revenue streams, including ongoing relationships with several additional OEM partners.  We also have an incredibly strong and growing after-market business.  As evidence of the latter statement, we have just opened a European Service Center to support our booming international business, and we have promoted one of our veteran sales team members, Bill Schillhammer, to be the Director of International Sales and run this business.

Question: Is Avidyne coming out with competitive technology to compete with the G1000 equipped Cirrus?

Answer: Avidyne commends Garmin for its ability to gain a portion of the Cirrus market.  At the same time, Avidyne is very confident that pilots will continue to select their avionics packages based on core value propositions such as price, ease of use, interoperability, performance and future upgradeability.  Avidyne remains very confident that our current technology and any future releases will maintain and expand our position as the “avionics provider of choice.”
