Manuel Borja Chico, CEO of the Mexican legacy airline stated this week that consolidation of the airlines in Mexico presents major opportunities. Before 1980 approximately 5% of the population used air service. With the introduction of LCC carriers the market has been stimulated even though we don’t have final numbers for the total traffic. But in the past few months several airlines have been grounded for lack of capital and credit, high taxes and other negative factors. Manuel Borja told Reuters in Madrid during a oneworld 10th anniversary celebration “At times of crisis there are moments for opportunities…If one does what one has to do in these times, one becomes stronger and more successful. With the number of Mexican airlines reduced from 14 to the current six or seven I believe there is going to be more consolidation”.
